T.J. Sgwaayaans Young is a Haida artist from the Eagle Clan of the Kaigani Haida, known for his mastery of wood carving and traditional design. Based in Hydaburg, Alaska, T.J. began his training at a young age, learning the complex rules of Haida formline from his grandfather and other master carvers. His work is recognized for its powerful sculptural quality and adherence to classical principles. T.J. is dedicated to the preservation of Haida culture, viewing his carvings—from masks to monumental poles—as essential vessels for the stories and history of his people.
