Statement of Respect and Authenticity

We believe that Indigenous artists should be treated fairly and with respect. Authenticity of art, design, and culture is the foundation of our mission of building everyday connection to Indigenous cultures.

Native Northwest products are guided by the following five principles:

• 100% of the art featured on every Native Northwest product is designed by Indigenous artists

• All artists have provided consent and contractual permission for their art to be featured on Native Northwest products

• Artist names are acknowledged on all product packaging

• Cultural traditions are honoured by acknowledging cultural affiliation on product packaging

• Artists are paid in fees and royalties

Justine Proulx is a notable Métis tattooist and mural artist who is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Treaty 1 Territory. With deep roots in the Red River area and Ojibwe ancestry, she is a direct descendant of Paul Proulx, who was a close associate of Louis Riel. Proulx is committed to honouring her heritage through her artwork, primarily working in the vibrant Woodland art style. This style is central to her paintings and extensive mural work, which explores the profound connections and relationships between spirit, animals, nature, and people. Having completed close to fifty murals and installations across Winnipeg, her large-scale public art, such as the Returning to Our Roots mural, serves as a powerful medium for storytelling and ceremony. Her creative practice is a conscious effort to reclaim cultural visibility and spark dialogue about identity and decolonization, embodying a call to action and a reminder of the resilience of Indigenous peoples. In addition to her art, Proulx is a licensed taxidermist, ethically sourcing animals to further her commitment to honouring life and its cycles.
