Chazz Mack is a talented artist of both Nuxalk and Heiltsuk heritage, although he is a member of the Heiltsuk Nation, he has lived in Nuxalk Territory for most of his life. He was born and raised in Bella Coola, also known as Q'Umquots, and is a member of the Raven, Grizzly, and Double Headed Sea Serpent clans. His Nuxalk name is Nunuusxli, which translates to "Is a fast learner" or "likes to learn things."
Mack describes himself as having been "surrounded" by art and artists his entire life, noting that his father, Joe Mack, is a well-known local artist. He began carving and creating art as a child and learned much by watching his father carve. He is a graduate of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art and has shared his knowledge by teaching at the Acwsalcta School (Nuxalk Acwsalcmalslayc Academy of Learning).
Practicing art for over a decade, Chazz Mack is a prolific painter whose fluid and engaging work often reflects the natural world, with animals of the land and sea as popular themes. He paints "whatever comes into his mind." His artistic style is noted for blending traditional and contemporary elements, possessing a sense of youthfulness and luminosity. In addition to painting, he is an accomplished carver, primarily working with alder and cedar, and also creates unique jewelry. He has contributed to the carving of two significant community totem poles. His stated hope for his work is that it "helps to keep the traditions alive so they are passed onto the next generation."
