Billy Bedard: A Haida Artist Rooted in Tradition
William "Billy" Bedard is a contemporary Haida artist, born and raised in Old Massett, Haida Gwaii. Belonging to the Raven Clan, Bedard was raised by his grandparents, including his grandfather Chief William Matthews, who instilled in him a profound understanding and appreciation for Haida traditional beliefs and heritage.
Bedard is largely a self-taught artist, primarily focusing on carving in wood, silver, and gold. His interest in Haida art began in his youth, nurtured by the vibrant artistic community on Haida Gwaii. A pivotal moment in his artistic journey was witnessing Robert Davidson's raising of a totem pole in Old Massett, the first such event in over a century. This inspired Bedard to pursue traditional Haida design and carving. He drew inspiration from the works of celebrated Haida artists such as Bill Reid, Robert Davidson, and Reg Davidson, often using their art books as guides for his self-directed learning.
Billy Bedard's artwork thoughtfully blends the traditions of the past with contemporary perspectives, reflecting his deep cultural roots while exploring new artistic expressions. His dedication to his craft and his heritage makes him a significant voice in the world of Northwest Coast Indigenous art.
