  • Kenojuak Ashevak was a celebrated Inuit artist from Canada, widely regarded as one of the most prominent figures in modern Inuit art. Born in 1927, she led a traditional, semi-nomadic life on Baffin Island, Nunavut, before her artistic career began.

Her artistic journey was sparked while she was recovering from tuberculosis in a hospital in Quebec, where she was introduced to crafts like beadwork and doll making. After returning to her community, she was encouraged to pursue drawing and printmaking by art promoter James A. Houston. She became the first female printmaker in Cape Dorset.

Ashevak's art is known for its vibrant colours and imaginative, often fantastical, imagery. She frequently depicted animals, particularly birds and owls, using bold lines and graphic designs. Her work often featured a central subject, like an animal or mythical figure, without a detailed landscape, giving her pieces a distinctive and iconic look. Her famous 1960 print, "The Enchanted Owl," is one of her most recognized works and has become an emblem of Canadian art, even appearing on a postage stamp.

Throughout her five-decade career, Ashevak's work was featured in numerous exhibitions globally, and she received many honours, including the Order of Canada and the Governor General's Award in Visual Arts. Her art has been featured on stamps, coins, and a Canadian banknote, cementing her legacy as a national treasure and cultural ambassador.
