  • Alex Janvier was a renowned Canadian Dene Suline and Saulteaux artist from the Cold Lake First Nations in Alberta. Widely regarded as a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada, he was a member of the influential group of artists known as the "Indian Group of Seven."

Janvier's art is distinguished by a modernist abstract style that seamlessly blends his Indigenous heritage with European artistic influences. His paintings are characterized by vibrant colours and free-flowing, calligraphic lines that create dynamic and intricate compositions. His work often explores themes of history, spirituality, and nature, while also serving as a form of social and political commentary. One of his most notable works is the monumental mural Morning Star, which adorns the dome of the Grand Hall at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec.
