Statement of Respect and Authenticity

We believe that Indigenous artists should be treated fairly and with respect. Authenticity of art, design, and culture is the foundation of our mission of building everyday connection to Indigenous cultures.

Native Northwest products are guided by the following five principles:

• 100% of the art featured on every Native Northwest product is designed by Indigenous artists

• All artists have provided consent and contractual permission for their art to be featured on Native Northwest products

• Artist names are acknowledged on all product packaging

• Cultural traditions are honoured by acknowledging cultural affiliation on product packaging

• Artists are paid in fees and royalties

Roger Smith, a talented contemporary Haida artist, was born and raised on Haida Gwaii. He belongs to the Eagle clan, Tsaalth Laanaas, and was given the Haida name Naad Kaa,wang, which translates to "walking away from trouble into the sunset."

Smith honed his artistic skills over two years at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, immersing himself in the rich traditions of First Nations fine art. His foundational skills are particularly strong in designing and printmaking, though he has expanded his repertoire to include wood carving, creating intricate portrait masks, spoons, paddles, and bowls.

His impressive work has been exhibited at various notable venues, including the Terrace Art Gallery and the Kitimat Museum and Archive. In recognition of his growing talent, he received a scholarship from Native Northwest in 2016 and, in 2018, was awarded the President's Art Award from Northwest Community College for a captivating painting inspired by a traditional Chilkat blanket. Furthering his expertise, Smith apprenticed under acclaimed Haida artist Corey Bulpitt between 2018 and 2019, and in 2020, he completed the Jewellery Arts Program at Vancouver's Native Education College, showcasing his versatility and commitment to his craft.
