Norval Morrisseau
Anishinaabe
Norval Morrisseau (1932–2007), also known as Copper Thunderbird, was the founder of the Woodland School of art and a global icon of Indigenous creativity. Born on the Sand Point Reserve in Ontario, he was the first to paint the sacred legends of the Anishinaabe, breaking traditional taboos to share his people's spiritual wisdom. His work is characterized by bold "X-ray" lines and a brilliant, symbolic use of colour that explores the interconnectedness of all life. Morrisseau’s profound influence redefined Canadian art, making him one of the most significant and celebrated painters in national history.
