Kenojuak Ashevak

Inuit (Kinngait)

Kenojuak Ashevak (1927–2013) was a pioneering figure of modern Inuit art and a global cultural icon from Kinngait (Cape Dorset). She was a founding member of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative and is best known for her masterpiece, The Enchanted Owl. Throughout her illustrious career, Kenojuak received the Order of Canada and the Governor General’s Award, traveling the world as an ambassador for Inuit art. Her work is celebrated for its bold abstraction and its joyful focus on the beauty of nature, reflecting her lifelong goal to "make people happy" through her creative expression.
