Beau Dick
Kwakwaka'wakw
Beau Dick (1955–2017) was a master carver and activist from the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation of Alert Bay, BC. Widely regarded as one of the most influential Northwest Coast artists of his generation, his work is celebrated for its immense power and traditional integrity. Beau was a master of mask-making, often creating pieces for potlatch ceremonies that blurred the line between contemporary art and living tradition. His legacy lives on through his students and his profound impact on the cultural and political landscape of the West Coast.
